Opplysninger | Norsk Protein belongs to the rendering industry managing specific risk material and more applicablestreams of animal by-products. The industry was radically transformed during and in response to theBSE-crises and its new regulatory regime entering into force aorund the turn of the century. NorskProtein was formed 1997 by the great majority of Norwegian meat processors, in particular thefarmers’ meat cooperative. Norsk Protein enabled industry consolidation to facilitate the transitionto the new regime. Since its foundation, the company has performed secure handling of riskmaterial, acted as a bio-safety risk management and logistics utility for the whole industry, anddeveloped effective logistics to keep by-product-streams as pure as possible together with a flexiblemarketing strategy. Flexible, segmented marketing is necessary in order to optimize the sales of fatsand protein meal in order to tap the willingness to pay in a growingly differentiated market. NorskProtein has proven high degree of flexibility. The circular bioeconomy that we may imagine for the future, will, however, require, not onlyeffective logistics, but an even more differentiated market apporoach and skillfull exploitation of thepotential of newer and radically different processing technologies. In view of the shifting nature ofbio-circularity, the company may need to consider shifting focus as regards the role of advancedlogistics, its functions as common utility for the cause of bio-safety and bio-technological innovationin side-stream management. Most options may require thorough consideration of options forstrengthening the business network and structure of strategic alliances of Norsk Protein.
