With the rising use of the Internet, online research has become increasingly popular and has been further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This relatively new realm of scientific inquiry has afforded social scientists novel research opportunities and methodological flexibility, as it embraces an array of traditional research designs and data collection methods. This paper presents a case study focusing on a qualitative research study that was redesigned to be conducted online with the use of synchronous (real-time) online video interviews to meet physical distancing and safety requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic. This case argues that although online interviewing is a time- and cost-effective approach to data collection that opens up new possibilities for researchers and participants alike, it also creates new methodological, practical, and ethical dilemmas. Drawing on the challenges faced and lessons learned throughout the planning and data collection phases of the study, this paper aspires to help novice researchers understand some of the advantages and limitations of this data collection method so that they can utilize online synchronous video interviews with confidence.
