Opplysninger
The research upon which this case focuses explored the impact of urban renewal interventions on the lives and livelihoods of people living in informal communities of Makoko community in Lagos, Nigeria. Makoko is a community wholly occupied by low-income households. It has been in continuous conflict with the state government due to its physical state, which has resulted in multiple urban renewal interventions occasioned by evictions and demolition. The research is conducted to generate insights into the impacts on people's lives and livelihoods in the community. The methodological approaches earlier adopted pre-pandemic restrictions were ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation, informal discussion, face-to-face interviews, and document analysis. However, these methodological approaches were revised to favour remote ethnography and photo-elicitation as primary data collection methods, replacing ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation when it became impossible to go ahead with the initial approaches. This case study evaluates the adoption of the methodological approaches of conducting remote ethnography research and using photo-elicitation to answer the research questions. Some of the challenges experienced in the approaches include recruiting research participants, building trust and rapport, and engaging participants in data collection. Similarly, other ethical considerations identified using the methods involve time commitment, positionality, and gender balance of research participants. Therefore, drawing on adopting these methodological approaches, this case study shows the practicalities of adopting the methods. In addition, the case identifies some practical lessons, including preparation of contingency plans, the need to be flexible and responsive, thinking outside the research frame, and the need to ensure equal opportunities for all gender participants in the research. All these combined may present opportunities for future students and researchers the possibility of overcoming the challenges they may face in their future research processes and designs.
