Opplysninger
Our study, "Gatekeepers: Controlling Communication in a Time of Crisis," involved conducting a survey using an online platform. Thus, this case study addresses the methodological challenges of conducting research online. Online research can be both beneficial and challenging, and we discuss both the pros and cons of our online research below. Benefits included reaching participants from all over the country, reaching an adequate number of participants, allowing participants to complete the study on their own time in a setting of their choosing, and timing (maybe!). That said, we still encountered issues trying to recruit particular subsamples of participants-namely employees of news stations and law enforcement officers. Additional challenges included choosing an online survey platform, abiding by all ethical requirements, types of questions used, the wording of questions, and missing potential participants who do not have nor know how to use a device with online capabilities. Overall, the resulting study brought intriguing, and some unexpected, results.
