This case study focuses on issues and dilemmas I faced when collecting data on a social networking site that enabled sociability, communication, and collaboration among teachers. To understand teacher online participation, I used an eclectic mixed-methods design with three phases to collect qualitative and quantitative data. This design allowed me to collect data through surveys and interviews and use data analytics generated by the website. The naturally mixed data facilitated a mixed-methods research approach to understanding online participation. To gain participants, I first used purposeful sampling then snowball sampling, the latter requiring attention to participant consent. The outputs of each phase led to recruitment strategies for the succeeding phase. After analyzing site data, qualitative cases were generated in the final phase to help me to understand online participation more fully. This case provides insights into issues of participant identity, content authorship, and the shifting field of the internet. I will explain how these issues faced in my 2013 study related to recruitment, sampling, and ethics, highlight key areas of concern to those about to conduct research online.
