Rear-Admiral, U.S.N., has had a distinguished naval career since his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1917. He commanded the U.S. Naval Air Base in Iceland when the last war began, and saw considerable active service. His most remarkable exploit he relates in We Captured A U-Boat As Captain D. V. Gallery he commanded the U.S. Navy Task Group 22-3, a submarine hunter-killer group from his flagship, the carrier Guadalcanal. Off the coast of Africa they sighted and captured the U-505, which then had to be towed 1,700 miles back to America. As a prize the U-505 was of inestimable value to the Allies -- yielding, among other things, the secret of the radio code used by the Germans in directing their U-boat operations. For this feat the author, together with his Task Force, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation: the U-boat is now at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, a fitting monument to seamen who gave their lives. This book has been edited by one of Britain's most distinguished submarine experts, Commander Edward Young, D.S.O., D.S.C., author of One of Our Submarines.
