Summary- Two experiments are reported which examined the performance of 48 memory-disordered male and female patients between the ages of 55 and 86 in their lever pulling activity when reinforced (1) with money (2) with fluid. It was concluded that the dominant independent variable is appropriateness of reinforcement. When reinforcement is appropriate to the individual subject, it is possible to obtain relatively normal fixed-ratio behavior in memory-disordered patients with either primary or secondary reinforcement. The therapeutic implications of the findings are discussed.
