| Opplysninger | Giving drugs to the elderly - pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic aspects.Pharmacological treatment is, for many reasons, more complicated in the old. Significant pharmacodynamic as well as pharmacokinetic changes related to aging have been observed for many important drugs. These are reviewed. Such changes add to the effects of diseases on the sensitivity towards drugs among our elderly patients. No method exists for predicting the influence by these changes on the responseto a drug in an elderly client. The author advices that for most drugs, especially those with a low therapeutic index (ratio between therapeutic and toxic dose), the initial dose should be low, and the patient should be controlled frequently.
