Abstract.- Abuse, neglect and exploitation of the frail home-dwelling elderly by family caregivers are traditionally seen as consequenses of deviant caregivers, or family systems. However, the burden of caregiving represents an additional risk factore, and burnout in informal caregivers may be another cause of elder abuse. Elder abuse and neglect, with the most devastating effects on the elderly, are emphasized in this article.
