Our understanding of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) hasadvanced rapidly, particularly in the area of genetics. Clinicaltrials of agents that offer the promise of going beyond symptomatictreatment to actually slowing the progression of disease, perhaps byenhancing the viability of neurons, are under way. Mast of the ideasfor therapeutic approaches that may slow progression of disease havecome from a combination of epidemiologic and basic scienceobservations. Anti-inflammatory agents, nicotine, estrogens, and freeradical scavengers are majorareas of inquiry. In addition to being abiological condition of considerable complexity, AD is alsochallenging from a social and cultural perspective. An appreciationof the changes occurring in our scientific and clinical environmentsmay lead to building more effective bridges between science andsociety and to better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to AD.
