A description of the social construction of dementia among elderlyresidents of a nursing ward is offered, based on ethnographicfieldwork conducted in an Israeli geriatric centre, This accountfocuses on the construction of positive social identities and theascription of roles for residents labelled as 'demented', Thefindings illustrate the split between personal and social identity indementia, The applicability of conventional socio-psychologicalconstructs such as 'I' and 'me' regarding dementia is questioned, asthe spoken manifestations of these constructs is critically examinedfrom a symbolic interactionist perspective.
