ABSTRACT: This paper describes the investigation of thought patterning in senile dementia Alzheimer's type(SDAT) and in comparison populations of age-matched normal elderly adults and normal pre-middel-aged adults who functioned as a performance baseline. In order to understand the dementing process in senile dementia Alzheimer's type, it is important to understand the detoriation of higher cortical processing which is at the core of the symptom complex. The higher cortical process of thought has not been studied systematically in the population of SDAT. The present study addresses this research need. The pattern of deficits in thought in SDAT is explored and analysed in the context of Piaget's hierarchy of thinking operations. Results of the research indicate thet the deficits in thought processing in SDAT are not random but rather follow a pattern of deterioration which is negatively correlated with pattern of differentiaation anfd develpment. The data suggest a normal aging pattern of thought deficit which is delineated in the present report; the pattern of thought deficits i SDAT is compared and contrasted with the normal aging pattern. The SDAT pattern represents a parallel but vastly accelerated form of the aging pattern. It is tentatively suggested that SDAT may represent a disease process which triggers and/or accelerates normative higher cortical aging, and that SDAT and the higher order cortical aging process are in some fundamental way interrelated.
