The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic substantially altered the daily teaching and learning life of medical educators and medical students around the world. In response to the pandemic, many medical schools adopted online teaching platforms. Therefore, it is imperative to explore the problems faced by medical students relating to their teaching and learning during online classes. I have conducted a hermeneutically guided phenomenological study to understand the impact of the pandemic on final-year medical students at Taylor's University, Malaysia. The study was conducted in April 2020 and an online focus group interview method was used to collect the data. In the study, the method of data collection relied on a video conferencing platform, which is notably different than the traditional face-to-face focus group interviews usually used in qualitative data collection. In this case study, I will discuss the choice of data collection methods and the challenges and limitations that arose during the online interviewing process. This case study also provides some suggestions for further online qualitative data collection.
