We initially set out to explore the success of women candidates running for public office in Ohio and Virginia, inspired by the extraordinary national success of women running for US House of Representatives seats in 2018. Our presumption was that we would find similar levels of success at the state level, but what we found was much more complicated and nuanced, and we discovered answers to additional questions that we had not anticipated. Conducting research using online state and local election results can be especially challenging. State and local elections are often not synchronized with national elections. While all election results are public records, there is no single online source for detailed state and local election outcomes, or standardized format for reporting results. In addition, the reporting of election results for offices such as mayor, city council, village council, sheriff, treasurer, and school board are not always complete. However, the availability of online national, state, and local election data has grown substantially over the last decade. Analyzing state and local elections using online sources, while frustrating, can produce unexpectedly rich and rewarding answers to a variety of research questions.
