Opplysninger
The research project took place at a United States university in collaboration with a regional health district and an urban community opioid task force. The project team created a pilot study aimed toward increasing access to and use of nonpharmacological options for chronic pain management. A primary goal was to understand more about what enables adults who are prescribed opioids to try nonopioid therapies for chronic pain. A one group pre-post intervention trial was designed to determine feasibility, acceptability, and effects after engaging in two of four offered interventions led by yoga, massage, chiropractic, and physical therapists. After securing funding and institutional review board approval, the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in Spring 2020 forced a rapid design change from in-person to all virtual study activities and interventions. The researchers were charged with creating a virtual experience that would appeal to study participants and practitioners of the therapies. Here we report on the steps taken to tailor the research plan in order to convert to a fully virtual environment. We will reflect on the successes and barriers to the transition and share ideas that may help shape future health interventions or online research projects.
