Opplysninger
In the Cognition and Anxiety Disorders Research Laboratory, we frequently develop and execute multi-method experimental research designs to help us better understand people's experiences with anxiety and anxiety disorders. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, our experiments were conducted in an in-person, laboratory setting. In response to pandemic-related public health restrictions, we modified some of our experiments to be administered online, which necessitated considerable planning and decision-making. This case study is the second of a two-part series, wherein we described how we transitioned two of our in-person research studies to an online, experimenter-guided environment. In Part 1 (Ouimet et al., 2022), we discussed the clinical and ethical considerations that guided our decision-making processes when testing participants with anxiety disorders. For Part 2 (the current case study), we outlined numerous technological (e.g., poor internet connectivity, managing multiple team members) and practical (e.g., managing participant distractions and no-shows) issues that we faced during a year and a half of testing in an online environment. Taken together, these two case studies provide a blueprint for other researchers (within and outside the area of Clinical Psychology and/or experimental psychopathology) to adapt their current or future research studies online. Given the uncertainty inherent to many testing-related factors (e.g., university access, vaccination status, distancing requirements), many research laboratories will likely continue to collect data in an online environment for the foreseeable future.
