As part of the diverse artistic subcultures of the East German Republic, the latter articulated a special form of cultural contradiction in fashion shows, performances and fashion theaters. By creatively counteracting the aesthetic and moral imperatives of the SED state, that fashion and its provocative staging became a crosshair of surveillance, repression, toleration, and instrumentalization in the dictatorship - and yet could not be tamed by the official structures. "Catwalk against socialism" conveys a comprehensive cultural-historical insight, illustrated with photographs, interviews and contemporary documents, into a dazzling parallel world away from adaptation, dreariness and a fashionable economy of scarcity.
