ABSTRACT: A range of literature pertinent to the occupational needs of persons with dementia is reviewed. The dearth of information on the general function of occupation in human beings is noted, and recognised as a deficit to the theoretical underpinning of occupational science and therapy. the development of health and social service awareness of occupational need in elderly people with dementia, is traced from its initial concerns with engagement in activities in residential settings. Current practice emphasises psychological well-being through an individualised, person-centered approach to participation
