| Opplysninger | The identification and treatment of depression in elderly patientsoften is problematic, particularly when a medical problem or physicaldysfunction is an additional consideration. This article reviews theepidemiology of geriatric depression, addresses definitions oftreatment resistance in this population, and discusses specificclinical problems that render adequate treatment difficult. Theexisting literature that addresses the utility of specific somatictherapies also is discussed. The article concludes with a discussionof the frail elderly, and recommendations for treatment planing aremade.
