| Opplysninger | Andrew Timothy. - An Anglo-Irishman, Ernest Shackleton left school at 16 and joined the Merchant Marine. In 1900 he applied to join the "Discovery" expedition under Scott, and together with Edward Wilson, the three men achieved a new "Furthest South". The stigma of being invalided home, however, sowed the seeds of his rivalry with Scott, and of his determination to make his own attempt at the South Pole.
