Much of the book centers around traditional observations concerning morphology, particularly those of the American structuralists, and how they are to be handled and/or explained within a generative account. In fact, in some respects Aronoff's model appears to re-adopt earlier, pre-generative views; e.g., his proposed class of allomorphy rules (see below) is reminiscent of what were called morphophonemic rules in an earlier tradition.
