A number of institutes conducted research at the request of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (the Netherlands) into the pharmacological and toxicological effects of ecstasy, the influence of user-related characteristics and environmental factors on the effects of the drug, and the development of registration systems. These institutes also put forward recommendations for monitoring. The Trimbos Institute (Utrecht) coordinated the research.
