Very few books on modern physics begin with surfing and the Eleusinian mysteries, but somehow this one grabs the reader's interest and keeps it. The work falls roughly into three parts. The first third is a gentle but sophisticated introduction to modern particle physics. The second part discusses neutrino physics, an exciting research area where particle physics and astrophysics meet. The last third of the book deals with current speculative ideas in theoretical particle physics related to neutrino physics, including string theory, extra dimensions, and the nature of time. Overall, Päs (TU Dortmund Univ., Germany) does a nice job of treading the ground between established and leading-edge science. The chapter on the author's own research provides a nice, rare, behind-the-scenes picture of modern research. Päs does emphasize the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics at the expense of competing interpretations, but this is a minor issue. The ideal reader would have some background in science. Both undergraduate science and engineering majors and well-informed laypeople will enjoy this work."
