"Overlapping with and overshadowed by the First World War, the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War was one of the most ambitious military ventures of the twentieth century. Launched in the summer of 1918, it was born out of fear that Germany was filling the power vacuum left by the Bolshevik coup of the previous October. With Germany's surrender, the campaign morphed into an explicitly ideological drive against Bolshevism. Some 180,000 troops from fifteen different countries took part, in half a dozen theatres ranging from the Caspian Sea to the Arctic, and from Poland to the Pacific. But today the Intervention is rarely discussed. If it is remembered at all, it is as an unmitigated disaster. In A Nasty Little War, Anna Reid offers a sweeping and deeply researched account of the conflict and its consequences, uncovering the Intervention as a major turning point in the history of the West. Coinciding with the close of the exhausting struggle in France and Flanders, the Intervention initially aimed to prevent Germany from exploiting the power vacuum in Eastern Europe left by the Russian Revolution the previous October. After Germany's surrender, the conflict morphed into the Allies' gamble to destroy the new and fanatical ideology of Communism. With the Allies came guns, tanks, aircraft, uniforms and medical supplies, as well as over £100m in loans to the anti-Bolshevik or 'White' side of the Civil War. The intervention was a failure. By the close of the conflict in 1920, the White armies had collapsed, and the Allies had suffered humiliating defeat. The conflict marked the moment when Britain began to lose her imperialist swagger, America her foreign-policy idealism. It also fractured and radicalized France and Germany, pushing the countries down the road towards Hitler and World War Two. Years would pass before the West established diplomatic ties to the new Russian government, but nevertheless the failure of the Intervention forced the Allies to reluctantly concede that Soviet power was there to stay. Combining immersive storytelling with deep research, A Nasty Little War reveals the Allied Intervention to have completely reshaped the West's self-image and relationship with Russia"--
