It discusses the different aspects of national unity and identity’s issues. It thus follows the path of Germany from the fall of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire in 1806 to the Wihelmian Empire’s collapse in 1918. „Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?“ Diese berühmten, im Jahre 1813 von Ernst Moritz Arndt geschriebenen Worte werfen eine Frage auf, die im ganzen 19. Jahrhundert wie ein Leitmotiv wiederaufgenommen wird. Was ist Deutschland? Welche sind seine Grenzen? Wer kann es vereinen und leiten wollen? Mit welcher Verfassung? Dies sind einige der Hauptprobleme, mit denen sich die Deutschen beschäftigen, während sich die Idee eines deutschen Nationalstaates langsam aber sicher entwickelt.
