| Opplysninger | Why is it that being in a relationship with somebody who speaks another language enhances its learning? And is this even true? The produce of a strong socioconstructivist perspective on human development, this book integrates applied linguistics to sociology, sociolinguistics and psychosociolinguistics in order to investigate the influence on the appropriation of a new language of an increasingly frequent marital pattern, both in Switzerland and abroad – the couple « with several languages ». Aimed at specialists, students and people interested in mixed couples and/or language learning, the book deconstructs the couple, considered here as the encounter between two subjective individuals connecting around a common project rather than a romantic relationship. It deconstructs language, understood in this research as a repertoire of necessarily multilingual resources for expressing oneself. It deconstructs L2 acquisition, more a means to an end than a life goal. It also deconstructs the personal narrative, now the product of a socially anchored self, and projects it into a fully engaged actor who is not only his life’s narrator, but also its agent and critic.
