The methodological questions explored in this case study emerge from research interviewing first-generation Latina/o/x students about their motivations to attend college and persist toward degree completion. Centered in Latina/o/x critical race theory (LatCrit) and community cultural wealth model (CCW), my research examines the overlapping forms of cultural wealth that students access throughout their educational journeys, with a particular focus on how resistance oppression fuels students' persistence. Methodologically, this research uses semi-structured interviewing for data collection. Initially, I conducted these interviews in person; however, my research was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting institutional closures that happened in 2020. I eventually made the decision to continue with my research by conducting interviews remotely. However, as explored in this case study, this decision corresponded with new methodological challenges related to participant recruitment and developing trust and rapport with participants. Additionally, it raised new ethical considerations related to privacy and confidentiality. In addressing these challenges, I relied upon respondent-driven sampling to recruit participants who were no longer present on college campuses. Additionally, I expanded my understanding of privacy to include not only the space I was in but that of my participants as well. Finally, I facilitated a shared vulnerable space with participants, in which I offered information about my own feelings and experiences as a way to build trust and rapport across a digital interface. These considerations have relevance for remote or online interviewing, even after the restrictions related to the pandemic have subsided.
