Opplysninger
The development of online newspapers has led to an increase in reader interactions with news and features stories, usually posted online directly below the articles. These "below the line" comments have allowed anyone with access to the internet to immediately respond. In addition, there has also been an expansion of internet forums, where people can communicate with others who have similar interests. Two of these were used to provide the sample and the data that led to the research under discussion in this case study, which was an analysis of social media threads about people's attitudes to women's name changing at marriage. The impetus for the research was my own personal interest in the subject, and the availability of an opportunistic sample. These discussion threads were subjected to thematic analysis, which highlighted differences in opinions about the relevancy of feminist opinions and personal choice to the issue. The all-pervasive nature and popularity of social media means that many people are empowered to contribute their opinions, and while this may be a good source of data for the social researcher, the issue of online abuse has been increasing and, therefore, comments are often edited or removed. While cyberbullying is obviously unacceptable, and sometimes illegal, researchers need to be aware that they may only have access to those opinions deemed acceptable by the publication.
