Opplysninger
This case study reviews the use of online video conferencing technology, such as Zoom, for conducting online interviews. The research context for this case study was a dissertation which examined the use of political conversations among rural Oklahoman college students as they navigated their personal and social sense of self. Primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the study was forced to move the study online. This case study provides an overview of methods used, with special focus on beginning research and data collection. Next, the case study provides an overview of specific challenges that researchers may run into when conducting interviews online, along with ways to overcome those challenges. Research challenges were related to interpersonal dynamics, how the researcher interacts with the participant, and contextual challenges related to the interview setting, or where the interviews were conducted. Following a description of challenges and methods for overcoming these challenges, practical lessons learned from conducting this study are discussed. In particular, the author discusses the importance of practicing interviews beforehand, being flexible, and practicing self-monitoring and reflexivity. Finally, an evaluation of the use of online video conferencing technology as a medium for conducting interviews is provided.
