Opplysninger
Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early and late Middle Ages, Italian and European. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, the Marca di Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional fortune, remaining vital until almost the entire 11th century. On the other hand, it constitutes one of the contexts best illuminated by the sources: the documentation on the territory of Lucca from the beginning of the eighth century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study to return to reflect on historical transformations of general significance. Starting from a systematic research on Lucca's documentary sources, a basin so vast that it still remains largely unexplored, this book aims to reconstruct the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society and to follow its processes of transformation up to the noble and chivalrous age. At the center of the survey is the social segment that gradually assumed aristocratic traits and a more defined profile of distinction, promoted the foundation of castles in the countryside and the formation of territorial areas on which to exercise powers of command and coercion.
