Different approaches to the rehabilitation of memory disorders following brain damage are critically reviewed. One approach is to try to strengthen memory through repeated exercise. However, such a "memory as a mental muscle" - model does not seem to work. A second approach uses different methods to teach memory disabled persons information in specific areas. Visual inagery techniques seem to be useful forpatients with memory disorders confined to verbal material. The "errorless learning" paradigme seems to be of particular interest for patients with more global memory dysfunction. A third approach is based on external memory aids to supplement memory functioning in daily life. Fianlly, it is underscored that a prerequisite for meaningful interventions is an adequate assessment of various aspects of memory processes.
