This article explores the relationships between caregiving stressorsand caregiver well-being in a representative community sample ofdisabled elders and their informal caregivers, The direct andindirect effects of stressors and potential mediators on the outcomeof caregiver psychological well-being, as measured by depression, were examined using path analysis. Potential mediators of the primarystressors on depression included mastery, emotional support, qualityof relationship between the caregiver and Le care recipient formalservice use and role overload. Findings indicate that the caregivingstressors (needs for care) led to caregiver depression indirectlythrough their effect on hours of care provided and the resultingcaregiver perception of role overload. Quality of the caregiver/carerecipient relationship mediated the relationship of the caregivingstressors and caregiver overload and depression. Finally, regardlessof the level of primary stressors, caregivers with high levels ofmastery or emotional support were at lower risk of depression. Thesefindings can lie used to inform the design of proactive caregiverinterventions.
