| Opplysninger | Home care for cognitively impaired elderly puts tremendous stress andburden on their families. Therefore it is important to search foreffective care models in order to provide support for this group. Inthis study, an intervention model-the Circle Model-was developed,tested and evaluated in six places in Sweden. The model is unique inthat family caregivers and volunteers were trained together in studycircles. After their training, the volunteers replaced the caregiversin the homes on a regular basis, which permitted the caregivers somerelief from the demands of caregiving. Interviews were conducted withthe participants to gather information about their training andrelief care experiences. The caregivers reported that the studycircle provided opportunity to exchange experiences with other peoplein similar situations. They felt a spirit of community with otherrelatives, and were able to increase their knowledge in careproviding and coping strategies. The emphasis in temporary reliefcare by the volunteers was placed on providing the relatives withfeelings of security and relaxation. The satisfaction among theCircle Model participants was reciprocal. The volunteers alsoreported high satisfaction and appreciation of the knowledge whichthey acquired from the caregivers. The Circle Model brings newdimensions to the home care situation and should be seen as acomplement to social services support. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons,Ltd.
