Psychogeriatric services have been established in most HealthDistricts of the UK. The distribution is unequal and whilst somecommunities are receiving better and better service, others havelittle or no specialist help. Psychogeriatricians are still in shortsupply and carry heavy workloads and many prefer to join well-developed services rather than experience the stresses of pioneerwork in unfashionable areas. Centres of excellence might improve thespread of good practice and broaden their research base by secondingsenior staff to deprived areas on short-term or longer-termcontracts.
