Age, sex, race, cognitive impairment, level of depression, psychiatric diagnosis and length of time receiving neuroleptic medication have been proposed as risk factors for the development of tardive dyskinesia (TD) in the elderly. The charts of 186 patients were reviewed to collect demographic, diagnostic and structured test data to identify the primary variables associated with TD in ageropsychiatric outpatient community mental health setting. The Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) was the only variable consistently associated with TD. MMSE significantly correlated with total Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale scores, accounted for the most variance in the multiple regression equations, significantly contributed to the logistic regression models and differentiated between those with and without TD.
