Complementary medicine is frequently utilized for a variety ofchronic health problems. We evaluated its use among patientsattending a Canadian dementia clinic. Using a telephone survey, weinquired about the use of alternative therapy, including nutritionalsupplements, herbal remedies, and chelation therapy, for problemswith cognition. Only 9.6% of our patient population usedcomplementary medicine as a treatment for cognitive problems. Afurther 29% used complementary medicines for general healthpromotion. While higher use might have been anticipated because ofthe limited conventional therapies available, we did not find a highprevalence of consumption of alternative medicine for cognitiveproblems. Knowledge of the use of these therapies is still importantand should not be neglected. A nonjudgmental inquiry into alltherapies being used (for whatever reason) should be part of theassessment of any patient with suspected dementia.
