Alzheimer's disease (AD) can present as a variety of clinicalprofiles. Although the most common presentation is that of aprogressive amnestic disorder with subsequent involvement of othercognitive functions and personality alterations, there are numerousother clinical profiles. AB can present as a focal corticaldegenerative syndrome with the clinical features dependent on theregions of the brain involved. Some of these syndromes includedisturbances of language, visuospatial skills, attentional functions, executive processes and praxis. The neuropathological substrate ofthese disorders is variable and can include AD, Recently, the Lewybody variant of AD has been described. Finally other modifyingfeatures that affect the progression of AD, such as extrapyramidalsymptoms and myoclonus, are also discussed. Although the progressiveamnestic form of AD is the most common presentation, other variationson the clinical syndrome can be important to identify because theymay have implications for prognosis and treatment.
