INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric side effects of pharmacological treatment are common in the elderly and especially among those with dementia. They are seen in the treatment of psychiatric symptoms as well as in the treatment of somatic disorders. These side effects are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated.. - Unwanted psychiatric reactions caused by a pharmacological treatment include mood changes as well as cognitive disturbances. Minor cognitive reductions with preserved clarity of consciousness are common but seldom clinically recognized. Major cognitive disturbances due to confusional states induced by pharmacological treatment are often seen in the elderly and especially in demented persons.
