To investigate same of the existential aspects of living with a life long disability we chose the coancept introduced by Antonovsky; sense of coherence (SOC) (38), which is considered ta represent an expression of existential attitudes (39). Chaos and stress are natural life conditions, with which all human beings have ta cope. However, to cope with these stressful life conditions coambined with a life lang disability may be an even larger challenge.Sense af coherence is closely associated with coping and life satisfaction, and research has shawn links between sense of coherence and health (39). Antonovsky introduced a salutogenic health concept. This concept sees health as a coantinuum, from death in one end to total physical, psychological and social wellbeing in the other (38), and not dichotomised into ill or healthy. As CP is closely related to health problems, but not being a disease, this concept seemed to fit well with our needs regarding the investigation of coping potential in spite of a life long disability. We therefore chose this concept to investigate how adults with CP cope and preserve health and wellbeing under stressful and challenging life conditions. Antonovsky developed a comprehensive, standardised and internationally validated sense of coherence scale (38-39). However, as our questionnaire was multidimensional and quite extended, we chose to conduct our study with a validated short version of the sense of coherence scale (4041). This made it possible to compare the adults with CP with a reference group from the general population in Sweden, which is assumed to have a culture similar to the Norwegian.
