The symposium emphasized multidisciplinary and international aspects as well as issues concerning practice in the teaching of history. The composition of the researchers invited to participate in the symposium created an interesting meeting between the more philosophical, historical didactical Germanic approach and the Anglo-Saxon history teaching tradition that focuses on school work and learning. The conference dealt with three mutually connected themes. The subject of history where historical culture and canon was discussed, particularly in relation to school historical culture as expressed by the choices, directions and structures adopted. The history teacher where the use of history and teaching strategies was examined, focusing particularly on those strategies that the teacher develops from his interpretation of curriculum objectives and the demands of everyday school life. The pupil where the focus is on aspects of historical consciousness and subject conception. The question of history teaching in relation to the challenges of a multicultural society is a recurrent perspective throughout all of these themes. Most of these interesting, thought-provoking conference presentations are now available for you to study in this anthology.
