Details of three principal song forms - strophic, AABA, and verse-chorus form -are induced from the 700 songs that placed among the Billboard Magazine Annual Top20s from 1955-1989. In separate chapters, the default choices for each song form are described and close attention is given to particular songs that challenge expectations interesting ways. As recent studies of art music have demonstrated, meaning emerges in the dialogue between a piece of music and the archetypical patterns it evokes and suppresses.
