Opplysninger | Introduction: The Origins of Neoleftism ; Leftism and the New ; The Antifascist New Left ; Exile and the Spanish Experiment ; Revolutionary Hope and Despair ; Postwar New Beginning ; Social Democratic Modernization ; Left Socialism ; The Sixties New Left. - "Though the New Left radicals of the 1960s sought to break with tradition in almost every way, their political ideologies and organizational structures in fact had a long history. This book traces the phenomenon of neo-leftism back to its roots in the interwar era and in doing so unearths some of the past century's most radical attempts to transcend capitalism, imperialism, and authoritarian domination. In tracing the various iterations of these groups-the "new lefts," plural-Terence Renaud tells their story across half a century to show how multiple generations of European leftists fought over the meaning and organization of their movements. Renaud focuses his study on a German political organization called New Beginning, founded in 1930 in Berlin, when fascism was on the rise and the world was entering profound economic crisis. For the members of New Beginning and associated groups, the question of organizational form was always at the heart of debates over how to achieve their political goals. Rebelling against the hierarchical party and union structures of the mainstream left, they sought out alternative forms-councils, assemblies, action committees, discussion circles, networks, and even militias-that reflected their antiauthoritarian beliefs. By weaving together intellectual history, social history, and critical theory, Renaud reveals the continuities between the radical antifascism in the 1920s-30s, left-wing socialism in the 1940s-50s, and anti-authoritarianism in the 1960s, a crucial history for a world in which fascism is once again on the rise and antifascist movements have begun to spring up in response"
