| It is a natural choice to place the Byzantine poets Christopher of Mytilene and John Mauropous together in one volume. Although they never explicitly refer to each other, they write about the same time period, the same places, the same persons, also largely sharing the same style, genres, and intellectual profile. Their poems display a sense of wit and a personal voice that is rarely encountered in Byzantine poetry.
