| The objective of Professor Jacobson's study has been to construct a grammar of the London dialect of the second half of the Fourteenth Century in the expectation that grammatical descriptions such as his will eventually lead to a restatement in linguistic terms of the historical development of the English language. The corpus of his investigation contains random passages from Chaucer, Wyclif and several chroniclers. His approach in the interpretation of the historical data is generative transformational but with some modifications for which he alone is responsible
