Cuomo. - Until recently, Nazi cultural policy has been a taboo subject among historians. This collection of essays by German and American scholars looks at the official Nazi attitude to theatre, film, architecture, art, and literature. The provocative essays show how rapidly the vibrant and diverse culture of the Weimar period was torn to pieces in public campaigns of vilification and persecution, only to be replaced by the "wholesome" official culture of the National Socialist party. The important part these campaigns played in the establishment of Nazi rule, and the high priority given to them by Hitler and his closest associates, makes these essays essential reading for an understanding of the nature of the Nazi state. Given the public emphasis on conservative values in the arts being expressed in the United States today, this work also provides a chilling, looking-glass vision of our own society
