Opplysninger | The music publisher John Playford (1623-1686) published The English Dancing Master in 1651. The book was the first to give tunes and dance instructions specifically for country dancing. Called The Dancing Master from the 2nd edition onwards, it ran to seven editions during John Playford's lifetime and continued to be published long after his death. His son Henry Playford (c.1657-c.1707) produced a further five editions between 1690 and 1703; publication then passed to John Young (fl. 1698-1732) for the remaining six, produced between 1706 and c. 1728. Many new tunes and dances were introduced as the editions progressed (for further details, see my edition The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master, Faber Music, 1985). Second and third volumes were introduced in 1713 and 1719 by John Young, but the original cannon contains the highest proportion of good tunes. During the 18th century other publishers too produced collections of country dances based on the Playford model.
