Soon after the Western encounter with Egypt, physical parts of the same landscape were brought to London, Paris, Turin, Berlin, and New York. Scientific exploration, artistic imagination, colonial geopolitics and daunting engineering invented and fragmented Egypt for modern sensibilities. Images of Egypt presents an ancient landscape in radical transformation across media, including supersized engravings, panoramas, porcelain, opera designs, paintings, photography and postcards, furniture and fashion, filmsets, exhibitions and facsimiles. With contributions by world-leading architectural historians and students from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.I juli 1798 invaderte Napoleon Egypt med en hær av soldater, ingeniører og vitenskapsmenn. Siden den gang har bilder av egyptiske landskap og monumenter sirkulert som fantasi og realitet i Vesten, mens biter og brokker av det samme landskapet ble brakt til Paris, Torino, Berlin, London og New York. Vitenskapelige undersøkelser, kunstneriske fremstillinger, kolonial geopolitikk og banebrytende ingeniørkunst oppfant og fragmenterte den faraoniske fortiden. Images of Egypt presenterer et antikt landskap i radikal forvandling og i ulike medier: kolossale kobberstikk, panoramaer, porselen, opera-scenografier, maleri, fotografi og postkort, møbler og mote, filmsett, utstillinger og faksimiler. Med bidrag av verdensledende arkitekturhistorikere og studenter ved Arkitektur- og designhøyskolen.
