Ring of steel. - The First World War introduced many technologies but perhaps the most far reaching was the aeroplane. At the outbreak of war, aircraft were to play an increasingly important role in reconnaissance and range-finding for the artillery. In the latter stages of the conflict, their roles included ground attack and long-range bombing. - This programme closely examines the development of land warfare and the effect it had on the conflict. From the killing power of the machine gun and the dramatic introduction of the tank to the emergence of the new terror weapon, gas, first used by the Germans with terrible effect at Ypres on the Western Front in 1915. - This programme starts with the key sea battle of WW1, The Battle of Jutland in 1916, which, although inconclusive, blunted the threat of the German fleet. We then witness submarine technology and the German blockade of Britain which nearly succeeded in forcing victory. The programme ends with a lokk at the aircraft carrier which made a major breakthrough in 1917 with the first deck landing. - Tilhører Engelsk-avdelinga (ENG), rom 179. - These new and updated visual accounts of the first world war combine a reviting story line with much newley gathered information and truly devastating pictures of the eerie landscape of war on the grandest scale. It is a compelling exploration of warfare at its most horrific
