Legislative requirements and industrial standards call for extended health examinations for divers participating in dives deeper than 180 msw. A previous report (NUTEC Report 20-94) specified a health examination programme for divers diving deeper than 180 msw. The report is outdated and in need of a revision. A working group was tasked to elaborate a revised programme for health surveillance of divers participating in dives 180-225 msw. The working group was supervised by a reference group consisting of representatives from the scientific community, industry, and regulatory bodies. The working group reviewed the scientific literature to ensure that health examinations was based on current knowledge of health effects of diving in general and deeper diving in particular. The group recommends that the existing health surveillance programme for diving on the Norwegian Continental Shelf should be strengthened by examination for HPNS including neuropsychological tests. The extension of the health surveillance programme is motivated by the observation that HPNS might have caused CNS sequelae in some cases. To monitor changes, the examinations should take place before, during and 1-2 days after the dive. Any symptom or finding suggesting injury or illness should be investigated further. The report details the recognised limitations and improvement areas (in particular organisational matters) of the programme.
