Opplysninger | In this case study, we described the challenges our interdisciplinary team of researchers faced in conducting a mixed-methods longitudinal study evaluating community transition (i.e., deinstitutionalization) of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Doing research at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the lockdown measures and stay-at-home orders implemented by the Canadian government, raised ethical and methodological dilemmas for our research team that we addressed by implementing unconventional fieldwork procedures. We collected all informed consents fully remotely and implemented special procedures to protect the privacy and confidentiality of our study participants. Similarly, instead of face-to-face data collection, we employed alternative strategies to collect all data remotely using technology-mediated methods. The fieldwork adaptations we implemented to continue our evaluation study at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic were successful as we were able to effectively complete the data collection phase of the study. Our case study provides a successful example of how researchers in Canada and internationally can adjust their study designs to fit the specific contexts in which their research takes place.
